ESRC Teaching and Learning Research Programme The full programme, of which this project is a part. This site contains reports and information on the completed research programme which explored children and young people's experience of, and responses to, contemporary society. Projects included: Civil Rights in Schools; Children's Understanding of Parental Involvement in Education and Moral Education and the Cultures of Punishment: a study of children's discourse. The Scottish Council for Research in Education A well-organised and informative site which includes short reports on classroom-based research and a discussion forum for teachers interested in carrying out research in their own classrooms. SCRE also produces booklets for teacher researchers which are available to order through the website or by post. An informative international site covering all aspects of children's rights. Features include a comprehensive database of research and literature on children's rights, views and participation and a links section of organisations around the world which are working with children and young people. Students as Partners in Learning is an innovative programme whereby students observe lessons and give feedback. It originated out of a Students as Researchers project at Sharnbrook Upper School in Bedford which explored how students and ITT students could work collaboratively as part of the learning process. School Councils UK has been helping schools to develop into caring communities, working with teachers and pupils in primary, secondary and special schools for more than ten years. School Councils UK, which is supported by the DfES and accredited as a TA Headlamp Trainer, also works in partnership with local education authorities. The Centre for Educational Innovation The Centre for Educational Innovation at Sussex School of Education provides a forum for innovative work with schools and colleges in the region, primarily in the areas of leadership, pupil-centred learning and student voice. It reflects the importance that the University attaches to forging close relations with the community. The Centre offers the opportunity for debate on issues around the government's education agenda. Research and consultancy work includes recently awarded contracts with the Department for Education and Skills and Portsmouth City Council. The Centre also works in partnership with the Sussex Sixth Form Colleges Consortium and the national college for school leadership. Wheatcroft JMI worked with projects 3 and 4 and regularly includes information about Students as Researchers and its Student Voice work in its newsletters 'Team Talk' produced by the children (see under 'school').
Overseas Work
Much interesting work on student participation is happening in Australia. Some Australian sites worth exploring include: 'Connect, the Newsletter supporting Student Participation' has been produced six times a year since 1979. Australian Clearing House for Youth Studies contains this good information resources page but is also a comprehensive site which deals with many aspects of working with young people and includes a link specifically related to the issue of pupil consultation. Explore the whole site from its homepage . 'Youth Field Express', its email newsletter, often has articles on youth participation. The Youth Research Centre website contains interesting material . See also The Youth Affairs Research Network which has details of emailing lists, other research centres in Australia and around the world and other resources and publications. The first stated aim of the Professional Association of SRC Teacher/Advisers based in New South Wales is "to actively support teachers and students involved in Student Representative Councils." It is particularly active in promoting civics and citizenship education. The Victorian Secondary Students Network is the website of "The Office for Youth" and aims to give "Victoria's young people a strong voice and a real input into government policy and program development. "
Soundout.org promotes meaningful student involvement in school change in the USA. Its site includes a number of downloadable articles and publications, a newsletter, bibliography and links page. An AERA (American Educational Research Association) contributor, Dana Mitra at Stanford University in the US, has set up a Student Voice email list. You may wish to join this, although we can't yet comment on the topics discussed as we have not as yet received any emails from it!
